Farmers Introduced To MGAP Standards At Training Workshop
Workshop held to familiarise farmers with MGAP, promoting safety of locally grown produce
A workshop has been held to familiarise farmers with Maldives Good Agricultural Practices (MGAP) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the health safety of locally grown produce.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare conducted the two-day programme, introducing participants to MGAP standards designed to improve farming methods and promote safer food production.
A total of 55 participants from 22 islands took part, with each island represented by one council official and one farmer. The theory sessions were held in Male’ City, followed by practical training in A.A. Thoddoo.
The Ministry said the training marks a further step in its efforts to modernise the agricultural sector. It noted that 50 farmers were trained last year under a UNDP-supported initiative, and stated that 10 farms in B. Goidhoo have now been certified under the first five MGAP modules.
Concerns remain in some communities regarding farming practices. In Goidhoo, residents have voiced alarm over the unsafe use of pesticides. A citizen recently wrote to the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health, noting nine cancer cases reported on the island over the past five years and calling for tighter monitoring of agricultural activities.
