Yesterday, the government awarded contracts to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Road Development Corporation (RDC), and Fenaka Corporation for the establishment and upgradation of waste and resource management centres on 75 islands.
As part of this initiative, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment is implementing the “Magey Saafu Raajje” programme to enhance waste management infrastructure across the country.
This follows last week’s decision by the Ministry to assign the Waste Management Corporation the task of setting up similar centres in 34 islands. With these latest agreements, four state-owned companies have been contracted to establish or upgrade waste management infrastructure in 109 islands.
In addition to these projects, waste management infrastructure has been set up on other islands in recent years, meeting the standards set by the Ministry or progressing through ongoing projects funded through foreign assistance. According to the government, work on these initiatives is expected to be completed by the last quarter of the year.
Further support for waste management efforts includes providing necessary equipment for waste and resource management centres in rural areas. Additionally, garbage trucks will be distributed this year to islands where such equipment is unavailable.
