A Maldivian man has died after sustaining serious injuries in a landing craft capsize near the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area in Malé yesterday.

The incident occurred at 3:44 p.m. when a landing craft overturned outside the MPL port. Six people were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment, including four Maldivians and two foreigners.

The deceased was identified as Ali Aflah Abdulla, 25, from Dilbahaaruge, GA. Gemanafushi. IGMH confirmed that he died at 2:45 a.m. on Monday. The hospital did not release details regarding the nature of his injuries.

Hospital officials stated that all other individuals treated following the incident have since been discharged.

A 32-year-old Bangladeshi national, Masud Hossain, also died on Sunday while receiving treatment for serious injuries sustained in the same accident.

Landing craft accidents have caused multiple fatalities in recent years. Last month, three people were killed when a landing craft capsized near K. Eriyadu, and in June last year, a soldier died when a landing craft sank en route from Malé to Lhaviyani Atoll.

Police have launched an investigation into Sunday’s incident.
