Minister Defends Renovation of Izzuddeen Jetty Amid Economic Concerns
Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, has emphasised the necessity of renovating the official Izzuddeen Jetty, citing significant disrepair due to prolonged lack of maintenance.
Dr Muththalib’s remarks came in response to criticism on the social media platform X. Critics questioned the timing of the renovation, pointing out President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent announcement about measures to reduce government expenditures amidst the nation’s challenging economic situation. Some have argued that the jetty is in “perfectly good condition.”

In defence, the Minister highlighted the jetty’s deteriorated state, stressing the safety risks posed by years of inadequate upkeep. He noted that an agreement to renovate the jetty was signed with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on 14 August last year, during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
“The Presidential Jetty generates revenue for the State through fees from numerous resorts. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure the jetty is built to a high standard,” Dr Muththalib posted on X.
The renovation project, contracted to MTCC for MVR 11.7 million, is being executed under a design and build policy. Planned changes include replacing the current roof structure, which resembles white canvas sails, with a wooden roof designed to replicate the structure from the administration of President Mohamed Ameen.
