A two-storey building in A Block of Iskandhar School has been demolished after being declared structurally unsafe.
The decision to tear down the building comes eight to nine years after it was first reported as damaged. According to the Education Ministry, the structure, which was built 64 years ago, had been surveyed twice in recent years by both authorities and experts, who confirmed it was no longer fit for use.
Although seven classrooms were housed in the building, it had been closed off for several years. The ground floor had been repurposed as a storage facility, while the second floor remained in use for the principal’s office, deputy principals’ rooms, teachers’ rooms and a health room.
Parents of students had long voiced concerns about the condition of the building, with many warning that it was in a severe state of disrepair. The school, which accommodates more than 2,000 students, currently relies on B Block and C Block to hold classes.
This shift has led to overcrowding and difficulties in managing the school’s operations, according to some parents. In response, the Education Ministry has confirmed that a new building will be constructed on the same site.
The new structure is expected to contain 21 classrooms and, as stated by the ministry, is aimed at addressing the current space constraints and improving the overall learning environment at Iskandhar School.
