The work resumed on 10 November following a temporary halt and was further accelerated on 28 November with the deployment of two dredgers operating simultaneously.
The project is being directly overseen by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as part of wider efforts to expedite housing-related development in the Greater Male’ area. Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMC) is carrying out the reclamation work.
Phase III involves dredging a total of 63 hectares, and the government expects the project to be completed before the end of the year. A 22,000 CBM dredger provided by Netherlands-based Boskalis is currently in use. Once Phase III is finalised, the dredgers will be transferred to Gulhifalhu to commence the next phase of reclamation, which is also expected to progress rapidly.
The government stated that more than 1,600 hectares of land are being reclaimed across five locations to address the housing shortage in Male’ City. This includes 277 hectares from Gulhifalhu and a further 277 hectares from Hulhumale’ Phase I. Additional work is under way to accelerate dredging activities at Ras Male’.
