The Parliament’s Judiciary Committee has passed a no-confidence motion against Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.

The motion was submitted by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). The Judiciary Committee reviewed the motion and held a closed-door meeting with Shameem earlier today, allowing him to respond to the allegations.

The motion was approved with a vote of 8-2. The two dissenting votes came from members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), while the committee chair, Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarak, abstained from voting.

In response, Shameem characterised the no-confidence motion as “baseless, tired, and previously addressed,” asserting that it stemmed from his efforts to maintain an independent Prosecutor General’s Office. He criticised the committee’s process, stating that the notice did not detail specific allegations, thus undermining his ability to provide a comprehensive defence.

Shameem denied the allegations, suggesting they were recycled and lacked merit. He expressed his willingness to resign if asked directly, rather than facing what he described as unfounded accusations.

Shameem also noted that he had engaged with senior government officials during his tenure, none of whom had raised concerns about his work. He highlighted his impartiality, citing his prosecution of various high-profile figures, including a former president.

He questioned the timing and motivations behind the motion, noting that similar issues had not been raised until recently. Shameem maintained that the real issue was his commitment to ensuring the Prosecutor General’s Office remained free from external influences.
