Police Arrest Suspect in Viber Account Fraud Claiming MVR 150,000

Maldives Police Service (MPS) arrested a Maldivian man last Thursday for allegedly compromising another person’s Viber account and using it to extort over MVR 150,000.
According to the MPS, Ahmed Hass’aan, 33, from Malé, used the compromised Viber account, the widely used messaging application in the Maldives, to contact multiple people and obtain MVR 150,300 (USD 9,760.67). The case was first reported to the Anti-Scam Centre on 30 November, and he was taken into custody under court order, the police said.
He is to remain in state custody for 15 days while the police continue their investigation.
