President Dr Mohamed Muizzu called to reinvigorate the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) by rebuilding trust and convening the SAARC Summit in a message sent to the Secretary-General of the charter yesterday to mark its 40th anniversary.

In his message, the President emphasised the need to revitalise regional cooperation, stating that restoring confidence among member states and resuming high-level engagement were essential to unlocking the organisation’s full potential. He said dialogue, unity, and cooperation remained the only viable path to advancing the prosperity of the region’s populations.

President Muizzu noted that greater collaboration would be crucial in addressing shared global and regional challenges, including climate change, renewable energy, public health, food security, inequality, and inclusive economic growth. He said a stronger institutional framework within SAARC would enable the region to respond more effectively to these issues.

He reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to a stronger and forward-looking SAARC that prioritises the collective good, upholds shared values, and contributes to long-term peace, stability, and prosperity across South Asia.

SAARC Charter Day is observed annually on 8 December.
