The Maldives Police Service has reported a concerning increase in cases of fraud and scams targeting elderly citizens, with numerous incidents involving theft and intimidation.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Police confirmed receiving multiple reports of elderly residents being victimised in similar scams. According to the authorities, perpetrators often introduce themselves as familiar figures to their targets, subsequently luring them to various locations before robbing them of their belongings.

The Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and to take extra precautions, particularly with elderly family members who may be more vulnerable when going out.

Authorities are requesting that any suspected cases be reported promptly via the police hotline at 3322111 or the emergency contact number 119.

This wave of fraudulent activity has seen a rise in incidents where victims are led to secluded apartments, where they are then intimidated and robbed.
