Velana International Airport’s New Terminal 1 Begins Serving Air India

Velana International Airport’s new Terminal 1 began operations, providing service to India’s national carrier, Air India.

A special ceremony marked the opening, attended by the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian. Air India’s check-in counters at Terminal 1 were officially inaugurated, and passengers on the inaugural flight received gifts. The first group of 132 Air India passengers arriving at Terminal 1 were welcomed with cultural performances.
Air India first commenced flights to the Maldives on 21 February 1976. With the addition of Air India, Terminal 1 now serves a total of 18 airlines.
