The bureau said the current spell of wet weather is linked to shifting atmospheric conditions. A White Alert has been issued for areas between Vaavu Atoll and Raa Atoll, advising of heavy showers, thunderstorms, and winds that may reach up to 40 mph in storm clouds. Rainfall in the northern atolls is expected to ease by Tuesday, although another period of intense rain is expected to develop from Friday.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that Thinadhoo City is the only location to have experienced flooding so far. Torrential rain from late Saturday into Sunday morning inundated several homes, the local hospital, and the island’s water plant. Despite the flooding, essential services continued without disruption. NDMA officials, together with the Thinadhoo Council, are currently assessing the extent of the damage.
The Maldives remains under persistent wet conditions, while neighbouring Sri Lanka continues to face severe weather. A cyclone that struck the country last week triggered landslides and flooding, resulting in more than 600 fatalities. Further heavy rainfall has been forecast for Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the storm.
