The State Trading Organization (STO) is set to launch bunkering services in the northern Maldives on 20 September, with the first vessel, MT Marine Angel, already docked at Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

According to STO, a second vessel, a 3,200-tonne bunkering tanker, is expected to reach the Maldives this Friday.

Originally scheduled to begin on Thursday, the launch of international bunkering services in Ihavandhippolhu, the Maldives’ northernmost atoll, has been delayed. Adverse weather conditions have caused the vessel’s arrival to be postponed, resulting in the revised launch date.

The international bunkering project is being established in partnership with Vitol, the world’s largest private energy company. The Maldives government has previously noted that over 300 ships pass through the waters near Ihavandhippolhu each day, highlighting the strategic importance of the region for maritime fuel services.
