Gov’t Reassigns Communications Authority to Homeland Ministry
The government has announced that the Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) has been reassigned to the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology.
This change, effective yesterday, was made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu through a directive under Article 116(a) of the Maldivian constitution.
CAM oversees regulation of the communications sector, including telecommunications, postal services, and information technology, in line with national policies.
The authority’s key responsibilities include:
- Declaring standards for telecommunication services in the Maldives
- Inspecting and licensing telecommunications equipment
- Regulating satellite communication to meet international standards
- Licensing radio communication equipment and managing spectrum usage
- Registering postal service providers
- Representing the Maldives in international postal and telecommunications forums
CAM was established in 2016 and was previously under the Ministry of Environment and Technology before being assigned to the Local Government Ministry by the current administration.
