Immigration Detains Expatriates Found Living in Cafés
Maldives Immigration has detained several expatriates discovered living in cafés.
In a post on the social media platform X today, Immigration reported that on Monday, they conducted inspections of four expatriate accommodation blocks as part of an ongoing operation. The aim of the operation is to identify expatriates residing illegally in the country, particularly in overcrowded or unsafe conditions.
The four locations inspected included two residences and two cafés. During these inspections, seven expatriates living illegally were identified.
This special operation, which commenced last Wednesday, forms part of Immigration’s broader efforts to address illegal expatriate residence and employment in the country.
Immigration has previously stated that action will also be taken against landlords who lease unsafe properties or accommodate individuals in violation of the law.
