The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has suspended 7,500 employers from accessing the Xpat system due to outstanding fees and fines related to expatriate workers.

The Xpat system is the official portal through which employers process payments for bringing in expatriate workers, including fees for work permits and quotas. All relevant applications are managed through this platform.

The Ministry stated that these employers had failed to pay fines imposed on them, resulting in their suspension from the system. Access will be restored once the outstanding payments are settled, according to a Ministry spokesperson.

In an effort to assist employers, the Ministry previously introduced a scheme allowing overdue payments to be paid in instalments. Majeed, a Ministry official, noted that 3,692 employers have requested to divide their payments over a 12-month period.

Among the applicants, the highest amount owed is MVR 23.2 million, which the Ministry has agreed can be repaid through monthly instalments over one year.
