Maldives to Enhance Ocean Surveillance with Satellite Monitoring
Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has announced that efforts are underway to monitor the nation’s ocean territory using satellite technology.
This development is aimed at strengthening the Maldives’ ability to secure its maritime borders. Speaking on a state television talk show last night, Minister Ghassan emphasised the importance of protecting the Maldives’ waters, particularly given the nation’s strategic location along global trade routes. He highlighted that the seas around the Maldives are frequently targeted by international criminal networks. In response, the government is committed to taking full responsibility for safeguarding its maritime territory.
The Minister outlined that several steps are being taken to achieve this, including the establishment of a satellite monitoring system in collaboration with the Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO). He noted that MSRO, which maintains connections with members of NASA, is working closely with the Ministry of Defence on this project, following the guidance of the President.
Previously, the Maldives’ ocean territory was monitored using a helicopter provided by India. In recent years, the country has also acquired three military drones from Turkey, which have further strengthened surveillance capabilities.
Ghassan concluded by affirming that the introduction of satellite monitoring will be a significant step in enhancing the security of the Maldives’ seas.
