MV+ News Desk | October 3, 2024

The government has approved the establishment of four mariculture development zones in an effort to diversify the country’s economy and maximise the benefits of its marine resources.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting on Monday, following the presentation of a proposal by the Fisheries Ministry.

The newly designated zones include:

  • Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani Atolls Mariculture Zone
  • Raa Atoll Mariculture Zone
  • Meemu Atoll Mariculture Zone
  • Thaa Atoll Mariculture Zone

These zones are intended to attract foreign investment and promote the establishment of mariculture enterprises across the country. This includes the construction of hatcheries and the rearing of marine species in controlled aquatic environments.

Additionally, the government has allocated a 73-hectare area 7 kilometres south of the Vaadhoo Strait for commercial-scale reef fish farming. Regulations governing the leasing of these mariculture zones are also set to be introduced as part of the initiative.
