Elderly Population in the Maldives Reaches Over 20,500
The Maldives Bureau of Statistics has reported that the elderly population in the Maldives stands at 20,553, accounting for five per cent of the total population.
This data was released in conjunction with the International Day for Older Persons, celebrated annually on October 1.

The report indicates that there are currently 10,530 elderly men and 10,023 elderly women in the country. Among this demographic, 63 per cent are aged between 65 and 74, while nine per cent are over the age of 85.
In terms of specific age brackets, the number of elderly individuals between the ages of 65 and 74 includes 6,335 females and 6,668 males. For those aged 75 to 84, there are 2,935 females and 2,839 males. Additionally, there are 753 females and 1,023 males over the age of 85.
The highest percentage of the elderly population resides in the capital, Malé City, where there are 6,699 individuals. Addu City follows with 1,802 elderly residents, while Haa Dhaalu Atoll has 1,303 elderly individuals.
The statistics also reveal that 60 per cent of the elderly population in the Maldives are married, 11 per cent are divorced, 29 per cent are widowed, and 1 per cent have never been married.
The study suggests training health workers to visit communities where the elderly reside to provide necessary care. It emphasises that the responsibility for this initiative should be shared among health workers and relevant agencies.
