Fuvahmulah City Council Initiates Smart Lighting Pilot Project
Fuvahmulah City Council has announced the launch of a pilot project to convert street and public lights to smart lighting as part of efforts to modernise and enhance the city’s infrastructure.
This initiative supports Fuvahmulah’s broader strategy to become a more technology-driven and eco-friendly city. Through the project, smart lighting systems are being installed, allowing for remote control and monitoring of street and public lights to streamline maintenance and energy use. To date, two street lights and 20 lights across four playing fields have been upgraded to the new system.
The city aims to complete the transition to smart lighting over the next two years, following a testing period to assess performance. Initially funded by the city’s budget, the project will seek donor funding to expand. Additionally, the council reported that 95% of its services are now accessible online through the recently launched “Afun City” portal, designed to streamline communication about municipal services.
Another platform, “Afun Ado,” has been introduced to foster public engagement in city matters. These initiatives align with the council’s vision to transform Fuvahmulah into a smart city, enhancing both sustainability and community access.
