Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has revealed that next year will be a critical promotional period for the Maldives’ tourism sector, with a particular emphasis on boosting visitor numbers during the low season.

He made this announcement during the Tourism Symposium 2024, organised by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). Minister Faisal emphasised that enhancing the global visibility of Maldivian tourism will be a priority in 2025. To strengthen promotional efforts, the minister revealed that the government is considering the establishment of MMPRC offices in select international markets.

The primary goal is to boost tourism numbers by 10 to 15 percent during the off-peak season. Minister Faisal noted a significant increase in visitors to luxury resorts this year, compared to previous years, where occupancy rates during the low season had been relatively low.

Faisal also highlighted the importance of diversifying the Maldives’ tourism offerings. He proposed the introduction of new segments, such as health and medical tourism, which he believes could provide substantial revenue streams. Drawing on Italy as an example, where one million tourists visit annually for dental procedures, he pointed to the potential for establishing medical facilities within resorts.

The minister stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the government and the private tourism sector. He underscored the importance of ongoing communication, idea-sharing, and consultations as crucial for the future growth of the industry.

In closing, Faisal reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the tourism sector by expanding connections to international markets and engaging with global stakeholders.
