The government has opened applications for the ‘Magey Solar’ project, a residential initiative that will install solar panels on rooftops to support the shift toward renewable energy.

In an announcement, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy highlighted the project’s role in reducing electricity costs for residents and advancing the government’s target of generating 33 percent of national energy from renewable sources.

The ‘Magey Solar’ project will be implemented under the following guidelines:

  • Solar PV systems will be provided exclusively to residential properties.
  • Residences will be selected in the order that applications are received.
  • Applications can be submitted via the Fenaka Corporation website.
  • System suitability and size will be determined through a net metering policy after site assessments.
  • No upfront payment is required; however, a 10 percent installation fee will be payable upon contract signing.

The programme will distribute a set number of solar PV systems across all atolls except Alif Alif and Alif Dhaalu, with Addu atoll receiving the highest allocation of 88 systems. In total, 748 solar PV systems will be installed nationwide.

The project offers both single-phase and three-phase systems of 3 and 5 kilowatts, with prices set at MVR 45,000 for a 3 kW system and MVR 75,000 for a 5 kW system. Residents may choose to pay the full amount upfront or opt for an instalment plan spanning five years, with monthly payments included in the electricity bill.

The Ministry clarified that system maintenance and repair will be the responsibility of the applicant.
