First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed has renewed her commitment to leverage her role as the First Lady to address the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Maldives.
She made these comments while speaking at the 11th Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary Annual Conference held in Tanzania this week.
In her remarks, Madam Sajidha emphasised that NCDs contribute significantly to mortality rates in the Maldives, making them a critical healthcare challenge. She underlined the urgent need to expand healthcare capacity and promote community awareness to mitigate the impact of these diseases.
Madam Sajidha also addressed the need for external support to fill healthcare gaps, such as the lack of specialised doctors, while noting the social and emotional burdens Maldivian couples face regarding reproductive health and infertility.
She expressed her appreciation for the cooperative approach among First Ladies present at the conference and pledged to use these insights to strengthen the Maldives’ healthcare sector.
