A validation workshop was held yesterday to finalise a guidebook and report template designed to support the emergency response plans for water and sewerage systems in the Maldives. This workshop was attended by 31 technical professionals from 15 institutions and took place at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.

The Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, delivered the keynote address, emphasising that providing safe and sustainable water and sewerage services in the islands remains a key priority for the government.

He highlighted that this marks the first time an emergency response plan has been developed specifically for the water and sewerage sector. He highlighted the importance of the workshop in addressing climate change challenges, public health, and human rights.

According to the Environment Ministry, this guidebook will outline essential steps for preparing emergency or disaster response strategies, assess potential hazards to water and sewerage services, and identify corrective actions to mitigate risks. It also includes a framework for responding to emergencies, such as water quality issues, wave surges, wastewater leaks, flooding, and other disruptions that could impact water and sewerage infrastructure.
