Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has issued a warning that properties used as hubs for gang and drug-related crimes will be seized by the state, even if it requires amending current laws.

The statement follows the rescue of a hostage from a flat in Hiyaa Tower 9, Hulhumale’ Phase II, where the victim was freed by the police after a tip-off from intelligence services. The suspects involved were apprehended.

Addressing the media, Minister Ihusaan explained that authorities had identified certain flats and locations as recurrent centres of criminal activity.

Minister Ihusaan confirmed that discussions with the owners of properties linked to criminal activity would begin in collaboration with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). He emphasised that if these issues remain unresolved, the government would pursue legal avenues to reclaim the properties, particularly those used as drug dens.

He also outlined that such measures are part of planned amendments to the Anti-Gang Crimes Act and the Drug Act, which include provisions to facilitate the seizure of properties used in criminal activity.

Minister Ihusaan underscored the administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Maldivian citizens. He reiterated that law enforcement would take the strictest possible action against criminals, especially in cases involving the kidnapping or hostage-taking of citizens.

“I urge individuals involved in gangs and illegal activities to cease immediately,” he said. “Choose the right path and contribute positively to the nation, rather than face imprisonment.”

The Minister further praised the Maldives Police Service for its 24-hour commitment to public safety. He also revealed plans to enhance security at the Hiyaa flat area, where a large population resides, by installing additional CCTV cameras to aid police monitoring.

The police have not released further details about the hostage situation, including the number of arrests made. Rumours circulating on social media have suggested that the victim’s head was shaved and that the suspects were planning to inflict serious harm, though these claims remain unverified.
