The government has expressed optimism about the Maldives attracting at least 2.2 million tourists next year.
According to the proposed state budget for the year, tourist arrivals are projected to reach 2.2 million, with the total number of bed-nights expected to stand at 14.2 million. This builds on the government’s projection of welcoming 2 million tourists by the end of this year.
In an effort to boost tourism, the government has been focused on completing the development of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). The terminal is set to feature modern facilities and is considered a key part of the broader airport expansion project.
The current international terminal at VIA has the capacity to handle 1.5 million passengers annually. In comparison, the new 78,000-square-metre terminal will have the capacity to accommodate up to 7 million passengers per year.
Final preparations are underway, with the terminal set to include aero boarding bridges, advanced baggage handling systems, and spacious areas for food and beverage outlets, retail shops, lounges, and other services, addressing the limitations of the existing terminal.
