STELCO Launches Wave Monitoring Project to Support Renewable Energy Goals
State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced the launch of a new wave monitoring project in the Maldives to advance the country’s renewable energy capacity.
This initiative, announced by Managing Director Hussain Fahmy on X, will focus on extensive data collection and analysis to evaluate the viability of ocean waves as a reliable energy source.
According to Fahmy, wave energy could offer considerable advantages, including a more stable power supply, as wave patterns are typically less affected by weather conditions than solar energy.
This research will assess how wave energy could complement existing renewable sources and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable energy grid.
Fahmy emphasised that this project represents a significant step towards diversifying the Maldives’ renewable energy portfolio and aligns with the nation’s long-term sustainability objectives. Fahmy said the project will support President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision of achieving 33% renewable energy by expanding sustainable energy sources beyond solar power to include wave energy.
