Tentative List for ‘Gedhoruveriya’ Housing Scheme to be Released Next Week
Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed has announced that the preliminary list of recipients for the first 4,000 housing units under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme will be published next week, with plans to hand over the flats by year-end.
The 4,000 units are currently under construction in Hulhumalé Phase II, managed by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC). This project is part of a social housing scheme initiated by the previous administration, intended to address housing needs in the Maldives.
The initial list of recipients, released in the final days of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration, prompted an inquiry by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The ACC had initially halted the issuance of the flats due to concerns regarding the selection process but ultimately approved resumption in February. Since then, the Housing Ministry has been reassessing the list over an eight-month period.
In a interview with PSM, Dr. Haidar explained that the ministry is re-evaluating 20,679 applications for the 4,000 units. He noted that the ministry would release the tentative list next week, opening it for public complaints.
Dr. Haidar had previously informed a parliamentary committee in July that the list would be available by October. However, a delay was announced on October 28, with the ministry citing the need for additional time to thoroughly review all applications. Officials now anticipate releasing the list by mid-November.
The delay has drawn criticism and fuelled protests in Malé, as the public urges the government to accelerate the distribution of the flats. The initial recipient list for the units received 325 complaints, and the ACC investigation concluded that 59.6 percent of recipients did not meet the eligibility requirements.
During his 2023 presidential campaign, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assured that he would uphold the original list without modifications and ensure that all eligible recipients receive their flats.
