President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Maldivian, the national airline, will commence operations with wide-body aircraft in early January 2024.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the government’s first year in office at the Social Centre, Muizzu revealed that Maldivian’s inaugural wide-body aircraft, with a seating capacity of 275 passengers, will be operational next year. These aircraft will enable direct flights to long-haul destinations, significantly enhancing the airline’s connectivity and services.

Muizzu highlighted plans to expand Maldivian’s international routes to include destinations in China and Europe over the coming year. Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen earlier stated that the airline aims to add two wide-body aircraft within six months. These additions are expected to support operations to seven new destinations, including three cities in China, Johannesburg in South Africa, and three European cities.

Maldivian Airlines previously operated routes to China and South Africa using Airbus aircraft, which required transit stops due to their limited range. The new wide-body aircraft will eliminate this limitation, allowing non-stop long-haul flights.

Currently, Maldivian operates a fleet of 15 aircraft, comprising one Airbus A320, two ATRs, and a mix of Dash aircraft. The Airbus A320 is used exclusively for international routes, while the airline serves 17 domestic destinations and operates flights to India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

Muizzu attended the ceremony alongside First Lady Sajida Mohamed, Vice President Hussein Mohamed Latheef, and his wife, Aishath Afreen.

As Maldivian Airlines embarks on this significant expansion, the move is expected to position the national carrier as a stronger competitor in the regional and international aviation markets.
