Immigration Achieves Deportation Target of 5,000 Undocumented Migrant Workers
The Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, has announced the deportation of 5,000 undocumented migrant workers from the Maldives, marking a milestone in the government’s ongoing crackdown.
Upon taking office, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu prioritised the issue of undocumented migrant workers, issuing clear directives to tackle the challenge. Shamaan explained that the government set a target to deport at least 5,000 undocumented workers as part of its broader immigration strategy, a goal that has now been met.
The deported individuals include those involved in illegal business activities. Shamaan indicated that the administration plans to intensify efforts in the coming year to identify and remove additional illegal immigrants.
To support these efforts, Immigration introduced the “Immigration Watch” platform, which facilitates the filing of cases related to immigration violations. Additionally, a series of operations and raids were carried out to inspect foreign-owned residences and businesses for compliance with immigration laws.
Shamaan also highlighted the success of the “Border Intelligence Division,” which was established to monitor immigration data, track individuals blacklisted from entering the Maldives, and oversee the deportation process.
As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen immigration control, the government has launched “Operation Kurangi,” an initiative aimed at collecting detailed information on immigrants in the country. To date, biometric data from 10,000 immigrants has been gathered as part of the operation.
The government plans to continue these initiatives to further improve immigration management and ensure compliance with regulations.
