MV+ News Desk | December 2, 2024

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has revealed its intention to construct cruise terminals at four key locations as part of its long-term development strategy.

Anil Adam, MPL’s Research and Development Consultant, discussed the initiative during a programme aired on PSM News. He outlined that the company’s master plan includes the development of four cruise terminals, with a feasibility study currently underway in collaboration with a Greek consultant. Adam emphasised that the project will move forward only after extensive consultations with industry experts.

The proposed terminals are to be located in Uligan in Haa Alif Atoll, Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll, and Hithadhoo in Addu City. Additionally, MPL plans to utilise land in Thilafushi, Kaafu Atoll, for tourism-related developments, including a cruise terminal, once the commercial port there is relocated. Discussions with the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure are ongoing, and MPL has formalised its commitment by signing an agreement with the Uligan Island Council for the terminal project on the island.

The Maldives is a popular destination for cruise ships, particularly during the peak tourist season. Currently, large vessels either dock near Malé City or anchor outside island lagoons, highlighting the demand for enhanced infrastructure to cater to this segment of the tourism market.

These developments aim to bolster the Maldives’ position as a premier travel destination while addressing the growing need for modern cruise facilities.
