MV+ News Desk | December 3, 2024

A total of 1,000 tonnes of goods have been transported through the sea-to-air service at Velana International Airport (VIA).

On Monday, Virgin Atlantic became the latest airline to join the initiative, bringing the total number of participating carriers to 12. The service, launched by MACL to facilitate faster and safer delivery of cargo arriving by sea at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), has seen significant growth since its inception.

The primary commodities transported through the service include garments imported from Bangladesh, which are shipped to the Maldives by sea before being dispatched by air.

MACL attributes the addition of more airlines to the service’s success and the growing demand for efficient logistics solutions. The collaboration between MACL and MPL has positioned VIA as a key player in global cargo connectivity, enhancing the Maldives’ economic integration.

The company also highlighted the role of its new cargo terminal, opened earlier in 2024, in supporting the service. Equipped to handle sea-to-air operations, the terminal reflects MACL’s commitment to providing secure, internationally compliant services.

MACL assured stakeholders of its dedication to further strengthening the Maldives’ logistics infrastructure, contributing to the nation’s economy and supporting global trade.
