Malé City Council has launched an investigation into a suspected case of deliberate oil spillage in the lagoon surrounding Malé City.
It is believed to be a foreign worker aboard a vessel, pouring diesel from a yellow container into the water. The footage has prompted public outcry and concerns over environmental harm.
City council stated they were alerted to the incident and have initiated an inquiry. Efforts are underway to determine the timestamp of the video to establish when the spillage occurred.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the primary authority responsible for addressing environmental violations, has not yet issued a statement regarding the matter.
The video has drawn criticism on social media, with many emphasising the importance of environmental conservation. Calls for greater transparency and accountability have also surfaced, with some urging authorities to disclose the measures being taken against those responsible.
Beyond causing water contamination and pollution, oil spills pose significant health risks to nearby communities, further highlighting the urgency for action.
