City Council to Resume Vital Registration Services Following Fire
Male’ City Council has announced plans to resume vital registration services in Male’ City within the week, following a devastating fire that destroyed a block of government buildings, including the council’s Vital Registration Department.
The fire broke out at 6:00 am last Thursday in a cluster of government offices on Ameenee Magu. The affected buildings housed the Housing Ministry, Infrastructure Ministry, Environment Ministry, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and sections of the Male’ City Council, including the Vital Registration Department.

The blaze caused significant damage, including the loss of essential documents. Fortunately, the fire occurred before office hours and did not result in any injuries. However, two government buildings were rendered unusable, and several nearby structures were also affected, with at least 27 residents evacuated from neighbouring homes.
Currently, Male’ City Council’s Vital Registration Department is operating temporarily from its office on the first floor of the Amin Avenue apartment complex in Hulhumalé. A council spokesperson told Sun on Sunday that efforts are underway to restore services in Male’ City by the end of the week.
Meanwhile, the government has converted Dharubaaruge, a convention centre in Galolhu district, into a temporary office complex for the displaced ministries and the EPA. Officials have stated that restoring the functionality of these ministries is a top priority.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Police Commissioner Ali Shujau confirmed on Saturday that forensic evidence is being collected from the site, with eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage under review. A team of foreign experts is also set to join the investigation.
Efforts to clear the site are already in progress, with the Public Works Department leading the demolition and rubble removal.
As Male’ City grapples with the aftermath of this incident, the council and government agencies are focused on rebuilding operations and ensuring minimal disruption to public services.
