President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Fuad Thaufeeq the Maldivian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand. The appointment was formalised during a ceremony held at the President’s Office this morning, where Fuad was presented with his credentials.
Fuad’s appointment marks a new chapter in a distinguished career in public service. He is best known for his tenure as the chairperson of the Elections Commission (EC) from 2008 to 2014 and again from 2019 to 2024. During this time, Fuad was widely commended for his commitment to upholding the credibility and integrity of the electoral process.
His leadership during the contentious 2013 Presidential Election earned him particular recognition, as he navigated pressures from the Supreme Court and security forces. In 2014, he was dismissed from his position following a Supreme Court ruling and handed a six-month suspended jail sentence. He spent the following five years in self-imposed exile in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Fuad returned to the EC in 2019 after an unsuccessful bid for a parliamentary seat, resuming his role in the public eye. Beyond his contributions to the EC, Fuad’s career includes service at the Ministry of National Planning and Development. He is also noted as one of the first three Maldivians to be trained to use a computer.
