NDMA Urges Preparedness as Heavy Rains Bring Flood Risk

MV+ News Desk | January 2, 2025

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has called for proactive measures to minimise potential damage from flooding, as heavy rains and adverse weather conditions are expected to affect the Maldives over the New Year holiday.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a yellow weather alert for areas between Vaavu Atoll and Dhaalu Atoll. The alert, in effect until 12:30 am on Thursday, warns of torrential rain, thunderstorms, and gusts of wind reaching speeds of 45 mph. Rough seas are also anticipated, heightening the risk of sea swells.

The NDMA has advised the public to take precautions, including relocating valuable belongings to dry, elevated areas and turning off unused electronic equipment. Residents in affected regions are also urged to remain vigilant and prepare for potential sea swells.

The MET Office has linked the current adverse weather to a cyclone that has formed southeast of Sri Lanka, along with a low-pressure trough associated with it. These conditions are expected to continue impacting the Maldives in the coming days.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have reminded the public to stay updated on weather advisories to ensure safety during this period of severe weather.
