The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced yesterday that normalcy was restored to most islands affected by severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall on Friday, as floodwaters receded.
In addition to torrential downpours, several islands experienced wave swell surges. The NDMA, in collaboration with local councils, is assessing the damage to the affected areas.
Reports indicate that wave swell surges caused flooding in Narudhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, and Inguraidhoo, Raa Atoll. Meanwhile, flooding from heavy rainfall was reported in Kudahuvadhoo and Meedhoo, Dhaalu Atoll, as well as Nilandhoo and Magoodhoo, Faafu Atoll.
Dozens of homes on these islands suffered flood damage, though no evacuations were necessary. Residents have since returned to their homes as the situation stabilised, according to the NDMA.
The capital, Malé, also experienced significant flooding, particularly in the western areas, where some streets were submerged in knee-deep water.
MNDF highlighted that waste accumulation within the drains exacerbated the flooding. Despite some public criticism, he assured that the MNDF had responded promptly to the adverse weather conditions.
The MNDF also supported local councils in deploying sandbags and pumps to mitigate flooding on the islands. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess the impact as recovery efforts progress.
