The agency has not disclosed the nationalities of those taken into custody. This raid is part of a broader crackdown on irregular migration, which began in 2023 and has so far resulted in the deportation of over 5,000 expatriates from the Maldives.
In October 2024, Immigration expanded its raid operations to the atolls following reports that many irregular expatriates were relocating from Malé to islands in an attempt to avoid detainment.
Alongside these efforts, the Maldives has been running ‘Operation Kurangi’, a programme aimed at collecting the biometric data of all expatriates in the country. To date, the biometric data of over 25,000 expatriates has been recorded.
