Police Seize Over 100 Boxes of Tobacco in Male’ Residence Raid
The Maldives Police Service has confiscated 103 cardboard boxes containing tobacco from a residence in Malé City.
Law enforcement officers raided the property, identified as H. Hulhugali, after receiving reports that illegal cigarette production activities were taking place at the premises. The operation was conducted under a court order.
Authorities stated that the activity was being carried out within a private office located in the building. However, they have not disclosed further details regarding the case.
The raid comes amid rising cigarette prices following an increase in government-imposed duties on tobacco products. The demand for cigarettes has also surged after the government introduced a total ban on vape products.
In a separate incident, authorities recently received reports of contraband cigarettes being sold at lower prices.
