Maldives Records Over 200,000 Tourist Arrivals in January

The Maldives has recorded more than 200,000 tourist arrivals by the end of January. This marks the highest number of visitors ever registered for the month.

Statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism show that a total of 200,241 visitors arrived in the Maldives as of Friday. The number represents an 11.1 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. It also surpasses the previous record of 180,288 arrivals in January 2023.

The Maldives has been welcoming an average of 6,905 tourists per day. The majority of visitors, accounting for 69.7 per cent, have stayed in resorts. A further 25.5 per cent have stayed in guesthouses, while 2.5 per cent have stayed in hotels. The remaining 2.4 per cent have stayed in liveaboards.

China has emerged as the leading source market for tourist arrivals to the Maldives. The increase is attributed to the ongoing Chinese New Year holiday. The number of Chinese visitors has exceeded 31,300. Russia is the second-largest source market, followed by Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

The total number of visitors from China stands at 31,388. Russia has recorded 20,902 visitors. Italy has contributed 19,042 visitors. The United Kingdom has accounted for 17,714 visitors. Germany has recorded 11,697 visitors. India has sent 9,550 visitors. France has contributed 6,845 visitors. The United States has recorded 6,168 visitors. Poland has accounted for 4,272 visitors. South Korea has recorded 3,536 visitors.

The Maldives welcomed a record two million tourist arrivals in 2023. The country won the title of World’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards for the fifth consecutive year in 2024. Authorities expect to increase tourist arrivals to 2.2 million in 2025.
