The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced a rally outside the parliament building tomorrow, coinciding with the opening sitting of this year’s parliamentary session and President Mohamed Muizzu’s second presidential address.

The parliamentary session, scheduled for tomorrow, will feature President Dr Mohamed Muizzu delivering his second Presidential Address, marking his first to the 20th Parliament. MDP intends to demonstrate outside Parliament during the session.

It is also expected that MDP members of Parliament will take part in protests on the floor of the chamber.

The session will be chaired by President Muizzu and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdullah, amid rumours of growing political tension between the two figures.

MDP’s protests are in response to the Constitutional amendments passed during the previous parliamentary session. The party previously held a mass rally to oppose the amendments and has organised another march to criticise government policies.

MDP has stated that it will continue its efforts until the government is steered in what it considers the right direction.
