Man Arrested for Attempting to Skip Café Bill in Malé

A 23-year-old man from ADh. Maamigili was arrested in Malé on Monday after allegedly attempting to leave a café without paying his bill. His family has reported that this is not his first instance of dine-and-dash.

He appeared before the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Tuesday, where he admitted to eating at the café. He claimed that he had called his brother to make the payment and believed the bill had been settled. However, he stated that when he attempted to contact his brother again, the phone was switched off.

Investigators informed the court that the suspect did not pay the bill as claimed. They also noted that, according to his family, he has a history of repeatedly leaving cafés and restaurants without paying.

The court found sufficient grounds for suspicion and ordered his remand in custodial detention for 10 days. Court records indicate that he has prior arrests and detentions. He waived his right to legal representation.
