The government has firmly opposed any policies or actions that seek to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, stating that such measures would undermine prospects for lasting peace in the region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement rejecting the proposal without directly naming the United States. Last week, US President Donald Trump suggested that the US could “take over” Gaza and relocate its Palestinian population.
The ministry reiterated that the Maldives rejects all actions that threaten peace in the region, including the expansion of illegal settlements, land annexation, and any attempts to displace the population of Gaza.
Additionally, the Maldives reaffirmed its support for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations. The statement reiterated the country’s commitment to the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Maldivian government also urged the international community to take necessary measures to uphold international law and protect the rights of the Palestinian people. The ministry emphasised that a political solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace, ensuring the coexistence of two independent states in security, dignity, and mutual recognition.
The statement was issued shortly after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed that the Maldives would never support any plan or policy that displaces the Palestinian people. In his Presidential Address inaugurating the Parliament for the year, President Dr Muizzu stated that the Maldives would not endorse any actions that undermine Palestinian statehood.
He further emphasised that the government would continue to provide full support to the Palestinian people in their efforts to establish an independent state.
