The President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has criticised President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for making new pledges without fulfilling those made in his previous annual address to Parliament.

Shahid described this as a serious failure in his constitutional duties.

President Muizzu delivered his second annual address to Parliament on Thursday morning. However, his speech was disrupted when MDP lawmakers protested, holding up posters with anti-government messages.

The session was suspended for nearly half an hour as security personnel expelled the opposition members from the chamber before proceedings could resume.

In a statement on social media platform X, Shahid condemned the expulsion of opposition lawmakers and accused the government of suppressing democratic freedoms. He stated that the deployment of armed forces on the streets of Malé, along with restrictions on assembly, demonstrated a broader effort to erode democratic principles.

Shahid also criticised the President for failing to deliver on previous promises while continuing to make new commitments. He argued that this amounted to a dereliction of duty and was an insult to the Maldivian people.
