The Islamic Ministry has announced that the mosque being constructed by SJ Company in Hulhumalé Phase 2 is expected to be completed by the end of December this year.

The construction of the mosque near the Hiyaa flats was awarded to SJ in January 2022, with an initial agreement to complete the project within 420 days. The Ministry stated that the company is currently working on constructing concrete arches.

Several other mosques are being built by private parties in Hulhumalé. The mosque by Fedo Private Limited is expected to be completed in March 2026, with ongoing concrete work. Batch Construction Private’s mosque is also scheduled for completion in March 2026, with cement plastering currently in progress. The Ahmed Saleem/Hafeeza Ahmed mosque is expected to be finished in May 2026, with finishing work underway. Sunfront’s mosque is also due for completion in March 2026, with concrete work ongoing.

The prolonged construction of SJ’s mosque has attracted criticism on social media. Allegations have been raised that the company is misusing duty exemptions granted for mosque construction to benefit its other projects. The Islamic Ministry previously denied these claims, stating that no materials had been granted duty exemptions.

The Ministry also stated that construction resumed after a long pause following the change in government. According to the design, the mosque will have a capacity for 1,400 people, with the courtyard allowing for a total accommodation of 3,000 worshippers.

The mosque is being built under a settlement agreement between SJ Construction and the Islamic Ministry. This agreement followed the cancellation of SJ’s contract to build the Zikura Mosque in Malé, which led the company to claim MVR 141 million in compensation.
