Hassan Zameel, who contested the last presidential election as an independent candidate, has called to protest against the government’s distribution of canned fish cases for Ramadan.

In a video shared on social media, Zameel urged the public to reject the canned tuna cases, questioning the financial implications.

He raised concerns about whether the government would pay Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) for all the distributed canned fish, despite the company’s significant debt. He also criticised government officials, alleging widespread corruption, theft, and embezzlement.

Zameel likened the situation to “feeding eel flesh to an eel,” arguing that public funds were being misused. He suggested that while some leaders misappropriate large sums of money, citizens are left with only small benefits, comparing it to “people living like chickens”.

Zameel called on the public to reject the canned tuna cases, asserting that those who did so would not suffer during Ramadan. He also linked this stance to the broader issue of electoral integrity, urging people to stand firm against any form of vote-buying and similar practices.
