The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has assumed control of 14 ice plants that were previously operated by FENAKA Corporation.

The agreement formalising the transfer was signed by MIFCO’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Vitaliy Lyubimov, and FENAKA’s Managing Director, Mohamed Najah.

The current administration has stated that the previous government assigned the operation of these ice plants to Fenaka despite the company lacking the capacity to manage them. As a result, several ice plants have been rendered non-operational.

MIFCO has announced that its engineers and technical teams are working to restore all ice plants to full operational capacity. With this transfer, MIFCO has expanded its services, which are crucial to the local fishing industry.

The ice plants now under MIFCO’s management are located across multiple atolls: Ihavandhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, Lhohi in Noonu Atoll, Alifushi in Raa Atoll, Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll, Feeali and Nilandhoo in Faafu Atoll, Hirilandhoo in Thaa Atoll, Dhaandhoo, Dhevvadhoo, Gemanafushi and Kolamaafushi in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Fares-Mathoda and Fiyori in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and Hithadhoo in Seenu Atoll.

Beyond expanding ice plant capacity, the government is also facilitating the installation of Refrigerated Seawater (RSW) systems on 100 fishing vessels. This initiative aims to improve fishermen’s access to ice while reducing costs associated with travel to purchase ice.
