Three Arrested in Lhaviyani Atoll for Drug Possession

Three individuals have been arrested in separate operations conducted on two islands in Lhaviyani Atoll for drug-related offences.

According to the Police, the arrests were made as part of ongoing counternarcotics efforts in the region.

Hussain Munaz, a 40-year-old from M. Nalahiyaa Manzil, Malé, was taken into custody in Hinnavaru last Friday. A subsequent search of his residence led to the discovery of substances suspected to be drugs, along with a sum of money. The preliminary weight of the seized drugs has been recorded as 66.02 grams.

In Naifaru, Ali Mohamed Fulhu, 54, from Nagilijehige, and Ahmed Viam, 26, from Daisy Hiyaa, were arrested in separate operations. Following the arrest of Ali Mohamed Fulhu, Police searched two locations linked to him, where five cans of alcohol were found. Meanwhile, a search of Ahmed Viam’s residence resulted in the discovery of substances suspected to be drugs, with a preliminary weight of 12 grams.

Hussain Munaz has been remanded in custody for 15 days. Ali Mohamed Fulhu was initially remanded for two days, with an extension of five days granted later. Ahmed Viam has been remanded for 12 days.

Police conducted these operations based on suspicions that the individuals were using and distributing drugs. The efforts were carried out jointly by the Drug Enforcement Department, Counter Narcotics Intelligence, and Lhaviyani Atoll Police.

The case remains under investigation. The issue of drug abuse continues to be a significant social concern in the Maldives, with the government prioritising efforts to address the problem.
