The service will be available from today until 27 February, operating between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. It will also run from 2 to 13 March, between 9:30 am and 11:30 am.
Each pilgrim will be eligible to purchase up to USD 500, with a single individual permitted to buy dollars for a maximum of five people. To complete the transaction, the national identity card or passport of each pilgrim must be presented to Bank of Maldives (BML). Payments can be made using a BML debit card or in cash. If a proxy is sent, their identity card must also be presented.
BML has stated that dollars will only be sold to those included in the list of pilgrims submitted by Umrah groups. Other Umrah pilgrims will be able to withdraw dollars from the departure hall of Velana International Airport by completing the transaction through BML’s USD booking portal.
Customers living outside Malé will also have access to US dollars at their nearest BML branch.
Additionally, the bank has increased the dollar limit on debit cards for Umrah pilgrims to USD 1,500, following a directive from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. This increase applies to pilgrims travelling during Ramadan and the first six days of Shawwal.
Alongside the additional USD 1,500 limit, debit cards will retain their existing monthly limit of USD 250.
