President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially designated Thaavathaa Island as part of Meedhoo Island and Ufulandhoo Island as part of Maduvvari Island, located in the Raa Atoll.

The President’s decision was announced in a Presidential Decree issued by the President’s Office yesterday.

This change was enacted through amendments to Presidential Decree No. 02/2025, which was published in the gazette on 5 February 2025. These amendments were made under the Decentralisation Act (Act No. 07/2010), exercising the President’s authority under Section 134(a) of the Act.

The President had previously pledged to address land constraints on both islands, stressing the urgent need to relocate economic activities due to public health and safety concerns. In his remarks on the same day, he reiterated the importance of relocating all non-residential facilities from the islands.

The President has been visiting the islands to engage with communities, understand their challenges and priorities, and work towards effective solutions.
